I realize that childrens content needs conflict, and in some cases action, and that kids connect well with stories about kids. But it is slightly disturbing the amount of dystopian fiction that revolves around taking a kid, telling them they are special then saying there is someone or something evil out there that they have to be the one to confront, and then get them to build an army out of their friends, recruiting them to the cause

Whether the target is actually evil doesn't matter, although this potential is explored better in some.
